摘要 Abstract
In this chapter, we present criteria for selecting quality literature for young readers. When teachers select books, we need to be mindful of the socio-cultural contexts of our values, our understanding of children, and our perception of the world. We discuss our assumptions of the purposes of children’s literature in the People’s Republic of China. These assumptions serve as the backdrop to build the criteria for book selection. The proposed criteria focus on characters, setting, language, and children’s perspectives. Book examples come from children’s literature titles published in the United States and other Chinese-speaking countries.
